Yenagoa – A notable Nollywood actress, Mrs Omotola Jelaide-Ekeinde, has criticised the recent Senate approval of early child marriage.

Jelaide-Ekeinde expressed her feeling on the issue while speaking as a Special Guest at the MBGN beauty pageant on Saturday night in Yenagoa.

According to her, approving early marriage of the girl-child will expose her to various abuses and exploitation.

“The number of the Nigerian children on our streets today is alarming and this is due to the abuses and exploitation they suffer in their homes.

“Many of the girls out of school today have been abused, raped and neglected.

“Who cares about the helpless and neglected girl children that are being raped on daily basis?

“Must we have to wait for another Malala Yousafzai before we do what is right for the future of our children?” Jelaide-Ekeinde asked.

The actress, who was honoured with ‘SilverBird Unique Personality of the year’ award, called on the government to rather empower the girl-child through sound and compulsory education programmes.

She enjoined Nigerians to rise and say ‘no’ to the enslavement of the girl-child through early marriages, noting that the time had come for Nigerian girls to be free from all forms of bondage and deprivation.

“That I am the most influential actress in Africa today is because my parents never gave me out to early marriage. I stand up to say ‘no’ to the National Assembly’s endorsement of child-marriage.” (NAN)

  1. This infant marital law is just a metaphor for the unlike parts that form a country called Nigeria. How on earth can an adult sleep with a 9-14 yr old girl and think that he is satisfying what God has wished for us to do with our manhood? So, an Ijaw man from Bayelsa may just hang around any of the maternity centres in Yenagoa, dangle some dollars(?) infront of some poor fisherman’s wife from Akassa(God Forbid!) or a farmers’s wife from Ovom(I remember that place) and pick up the baby from the maternity ward and head for Southern Ijaw. This kid will not be allowed to come to Yenagoa for anything until she is ready y to come to her alma-mater to have her own kid, bare foot, black young, illiterate , dirty and poor. Before she steps into the maternity ward, the expected baby girl is bargained for by her 68year old Village Chief whose livelihood is from some hand outs from some unwilling oil companies. Oh! What will happen to women in general?Already, they face competition from the Gay and lesbian community, women generally age fast and depreciate in facial looks, so, a fifty year old woman will as they say, look like Australia, Everybody knows it but nobody likes to go their. This law is passed to satisfy some really old fashioned people from some parts of the North. My former boss in Kaduna used to divorce his 14yr old wives and guess what? He had a Phd degree.
