Today, June 21st, 20134, the Social Media Committee paid a working visit to the Hon. Commissioner for environment Dr. Sylvanus Abila at the Secretariat Complex Yenagoa.

During the visit, the Chairman of the Social Media Committee Comrade John Idumange said the Niger Delta Region has a fragile environment fraught with erosion, environmental pollution arising from the activities of oil companies, silting, and recently the monster of illegal refineries and oil theft. He expressed optimism that with proper planning, our environmental adversities can be turned around.

He cast his mind back to the Asaba Round of the BRACED COMMISSION where His Excellency Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa State chaired the Environment Session, underscoring the prime position Bayelsa State gives to environmental sustainability.

The Social Media Chief said, the Ministry of Environment has massive task to rectify the environmental malaise and in this endeavor, the Ministry has to work in synergy with other MDAs. He reiterated that the Social Media organ is poised to do advocacy for the Ministry by way of using the Social Media infrastructure to create awareness, sensitize development partners to identify with the environmental challenges of the State with a view to addressing them. The Social Media can publicize the policies and programmes of the Ministry to get the public acquainted with measures we can take to protect the environment.

Responding, the Hon. Commissioner for Environment Dr. Sylvanus Abila said his Ministry was willing to partner with the Social Media unit, adding that so much of the environmental challenges emanate from lack of awareness. The Commissioner expressed his willingness to allow the Social Media Committee to buy-into the policies and programmes of the Ministry and to use the social Media Platform to create awareness.

The Chairman of the Social Media Committee was accompanied by Mr. Nwokedi Nworisara – Secretary; Mr. Saint Mienpamo Onitsha, Director of Operation and Mackson Edore another utility member of the Committee.
