Behaviour Modification Campaign in Nembe LGA Underway
The Chairman of Nembe Local Government Area Hon. Waribugo Sylva has put finishing touches on plans to embark on a comprehensive behaviour modification campaign in his Local Government Area to stem the corroding menace of drug addiction and substance addiction abuse among the youths. The campaign according to him will involve stakeholders such as; the National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies; Members of the National Youth Service Corps; Youth and Women Groups; and Civil Society Organizations.
The hint was dropped by the Chairman to the Bayelsa New Media Team correspondent a week ago. The Chairman believes that only behavior modification will bring about attitudinal change in youths to engender development. Hon. Waribugo Sylva holds the belief that any meaningful development in society is woven around man; therefore man should be the primary focus of all development efforts.
Behaviour modification is a type of treatment which focuses on altering maladaptive behavior, to teach patients more adaptive behaviour and to break bad habits. There are a number of applications for behavior modification, and there are also a range of approaches to this type of treatment. Behavior therapy a therapeutic approach in which the focus is on the patient’s observable behavior, rather than on conflicts and unconscious processes presumed to underlie his maladaptive behavior. This is accomplished through systematic manipulation of the environmental and behavioral variables related to the specific behavior to be modified; operant conditioning, systematic desensitization, token economy, aversive control, flooding, and implosion are examples of techniques that may be used in behavior therapy.
Behaviour Modification is alterations, changes, or transfers from a socially unacceptable and destructive act to a socially acceptable, nondestructive one. Research results have shown a strong correlation between drug addiction, substance abuse and crime. Studies of classical and operant conditioning form the basis of behavior therapy, which has been used in treatment of both physical and mental disorders, such as alcoholism, smoking, obesity, and stress.
Behavior modification refers to establishing appropriate behavior in individuals and discourages those that are undesirable. Behaviour modification techniques are largely based on the principles of operant conditioning developed by B. F. Skinner – an American behaviorist. Modification of the behavior is accomplished through systematic manipulation of the environmental and behavioral variables related to the specific behavior to be changed. The principles and techniques of this method have been used in treatment of both physical and mental disorders, such as alcoholism, smoking, obesity, and stress.
This is a pioneering effort by a Local Government Council in Bayelsa State at creating awareness on behaviour modification, as a prerequisite for accelerated development of the State.
