In many countries where tourism has become a major foreign exchange earner, the industry is driven by the private sector. The responsibility of government is to provide the much-needed infrastructure and create an investment -friendly atmosphere for tourism to thrive.
In Bayelsa State, the Dickson administration is determined to Government will provide the infrastructure necessary for tourism development with the active participation of the Private sector. However, there are certain pre-conditions that are necessary for Tourism to thrive, the primary factor being the safety of lives and property.
Tourism will be private sector driven;
Government will provide the enabling framework for the industry to flourish;
Effective community involvement will form the basis of tourism growth;
Tourism development will be underpinned by sustainable environmental practices;
Tourism development is dependent on the establishment of co-operation and close partnerships among key stakeholders;
Tourism will be used as a development tool for the empowerment of the previously neglected communities, and focus on the empowerment of women in these communities;
Tourism development will take place in close co-operation with other Southern African countries; and,
Tourism development will support the economic, social and environmental goals and policies of the government.
Tourism can only flourish the focus areas for “igniting the engine of tourism growth” were:
Safety and security;
Education and training;
Financing tourism and access to finance;
Cultural resource management;
Transportation – air and ground;
Marketing and promotion;
Product quality and standards;
Regional co-operation; and,
