Bayelsa State Commissioner for Energy, Barr. Francis Ikio has said contract for electrification distribution line to Nembe would soon be awarded.
Barr. Ikio disclosed this when members of the Oil and Gas Committee of Nembe Kingdom paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
The Commissioner, who noted that government has made provision for a new electrification distribution line because the existing one has some problems, reiterated government’s position on the sustenance of peace in the state and urged the people of Nembe to continue to ensure a peaceful environment for oil companies to operate effectively.
The Commissioner noted that Nembe is strategically placed in the affairs of the state and promised to assist the committee realise its objectives.
He said government expects oil companies operating in the state to maintain standards obtainable in their home countries, stressing that if that is done the usual friction between oil companies and their host communities would be drastically reduced.Speaking
earlier, chairman of the Oil and Gas Committee of Nembe Kingdom, Chief Nengi James-Eriworio said the visit was to intimate the Commissioner of his committee’s mandate and also to seek government’s co-operation to enable the committee succeed.
Treasurer of the committee, Dr. Godson Omubo-Dede, who represented the chairman, said it was the duty of the committee to interface with oil and gas companies operating in the area to ensure peaceful operations and also to serve as a watch dog to ensure that best practices are applied by oil companies in order to protect the environment.
Chief James-Eriworio, who appealed to government to ensure that Nembe enjoys electricity supply, congratulated the Commissioner on his appointment just as he commended the state governor for appointing a son of Nembe Kingdom as Energy Commissioner
