Bayelsa state Commissioner for State Capital Development, Mr. Zuwa Konugha has said the process of planning Yenagoa City would soon commence. Mr. Konugha disclosed this when members of the Executive Council of the Nigeria Institute of Architects, Bayelsa State Chapter paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
The Commissioner explained that the process of the planning, which would involve making provision for roads and gutters, will commence with areas that are less built-up, adding that the highly built-up areas would go through the process of urban renewal.
He called on the people of the state to always employ the services of professionals in the building of their houses. Mr. Konugha, who frowned at the building of structures without the required spacing, outlets and proper ventilation, appealed to Bayelsans to co-operate with government for the city planning exercise to work.
The Commissioner called for closer partnership with the Institute, adding that the Nigeria Institute of Architects could support government by organising programmes to educate the people.
He said the call for partnership had become imperative because the city planning exercise was important and government alone cannot carry out the enlightenment of the people.
In his speech, the chairman of the Nigeria Institute of Architects, Bayelsa State Chapter, Arc. Obunonyun Yousuo commended the Governor for creating the Ministry of State Capital Development.
Mr. Yousuo said they have come to partner with the Ministry to ensure a well-planned and befitting state capital and appealed to the commissioner to create a department of planning for the Architects, who are master-builders, to enable them do their bit of designing and structuring of the master plan.
He appealed to Government to also look into reviewing building approval fees and promised to assist the Ministry whenever they are called upon to give their professional advice to move the state forward.
